National STEM Disciplines Week and International Day of Women and Girls in Science: the initiatives of the Sant'Anna School
The National Week of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines, known as STEM, will be held from 4 to 11 February 2024. The aim is to raise awareness and stimulate interest, choice and learning in these disciplines.
Furthermore, 11 February is the 'International Day of Women and Girls in Science' to highlight the role of women scientists and to raise awareness of gender inequalities in the free access of women and girls to research.
The initiatives of the Sant'Anna School
Progetto STEM, le ragazze si mettono in gioco. Edition 2024
75 girls have been selected for the STEM 2024 project. The girls come from backgrounds of potential social and cultural fragility, as they all have parents without a university degree. The aim of the course is to make them curious about studying subjects such as computer science, robotics, mechanical engineering, agricultural sciences and in general about scientific subjects, including medical studies.
Third round table of the EElisa Alliance on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Young People in Science 9 February - international online event
The EElisa Alliance organises, in an online format, the third round table on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Young People in Science entitled "Women do not like sciences/Women do not love math" with the aim of overturning the narrative on women in science and recounting international good practices on the subject.
For the Scuola Sant'Anna, Prof. Andrea Vandin, lecturer in computer science, is scheduled to speak about how the narrative he and his collaborators have devised around two "little-known eorigines of computer science", Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper, can be a tool to bring young people closer to these subjects.
Social release of the episode of 'Ricercatori fantastici II ed. starring Arianna Menciassi
Friday 9 February will see the release on the institutional social channels of the Sant'Anna School of the interview with Arianna Menciassi, pro-rector of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and ordinary professor of Industrial Bioengineering, the new episode of 'Ricercatori fantastici e dove trovarli'. The format, devised by Terza Missione and now in its second edition, aims to bring citizens closer to the world of scientific research.
Voices of women. A guided tour through the stories of some women born, lived in or passed through Pisa over the centuriesOn Sunday 11 February, starting at 10 a.m., a walk through the centre of Pisa to discover the places, lives and voices of famous women, departing from the headquarters of the Sant'Anna School (Piazza Martiri della Libertà 33). City Grand Tour guides will present the lives and stories linked to the city of Pisa of famous women, including Virginia Wolf, Artemisia Gentileschi, Paolina Leopardi, Mary Shelley and some contemporary female scientists.
